The photograph begins when the model enters. Some models are experienced and very comfortable removing their clothes. Other models are not. It is not just they are removing their clothing for the photographer or anyone else who is involved with the set, they are willing to show their bodies to a wider and unseen future audience. These models are going against the stream of social norms, and this step, this willingness, invokes an erotic spirit. Even the unknown and future audience cannot avoid appreciating this level of psychological reality. Far from being peripheral to the finished image, the reality of the model as a real human person surrendering to the photographic process is central to the genre of erotic art. We, as audience, join them in this crossing over the boundary line, and we become intrigued and curious about who they are on the inside.
